New Wheeling Sequence Fall 2008
Interested in begining our Technology in Education masters program? We're starting a new group this Fall. Contact Dr. Randy Hansen for additional information.

Welcome to the Technology in Education Program!

National-Louis' graduate program in Technology in Education prepares educators to use technology effectively in their schools and to provide instructional leadership and technical support to other educators who use computer technology .Designed for teachers, resource persons, and administrators at all grade levels (K-12), the sequence in Technology in Education offers a unique opportunity to develop comprehensive knowledge and experience in the educational applications of computers and related technology. The program is committed to providing access to technology so that hands-on experience is offered in every class. Graduates of the program will be qualified as technology resource persons for their schools or districts. Students who enter the program with Illinois teaching certification can receive certification as a K-12 Technology Specialist upon completion of the required courses as well as receiving passing scores on several teaching exams .Specifically, students will be qualified to:

  • provide leadership in applying new technologies
  • provide training and technical support for teachers using computers and related technologies in instruction
  • apply principles of effective instructional design to evaluate and design instructional software
  • use technology to access and display information, to organize and analyze information, and to evaluate information
  • teach problem solving and higher order thinking skills through the use of computer software, multimedia materials, and programming languages
  • plan lessons and develop curricular materials integrating technology across disciplines
The Technology in Education program is available to students who wish to pursue the Master of Education or the Master of Science in Education. For teachers who have master's degrees, the Certificate of Advanced Study offers the Technology in Education program as an advanced option. Courses from this program may provide a specialization within the Curriculum and Instruction program or may be taken as electives in the Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Elementary Education. Technology in Education may also be an area of minor concentration within the Doctor of Education degrees in Curriculum and Social Inquiry and Instructional Leadership.

NOTE: According to the Illinois State Board of Education, the Type 10 Technology Specialist certification can be an INITIAL certification for those who do not already possess a Type 03 or 09 teaching certificate. The candidates complete an approved program, pass the applicable Illinois tests, including the basic skills, content test, and K-12 APT and with the institution’s verification for entitlement, are eligible for an initial teaching certificate. The NLU TIE program is currently discussing how to modify our program to make it suitable as an initial certification. Please contact us in September for details.
